RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN THE MOZAMBICAN CONTEXT – by Pastor Miqueias Mocala

What Is Religious Freedom?

Religious freedom is the right of every person to choose their faith, change their religion, or choose not to follow any religion, without facing persecution, discrimination, or violence.

In Mozambique, religious freedom is a right protected by the Constitution. This means that the State must respect all religious communities and treat all citizens equally, regardless of their beliefs.

Religious freedom includes the right to:

– Freely profess one’s religion.

– Attend worship services and religious gatherings.

– Teach and share one’s beliefs peacefully.

– Establish places of worship in accordance with the law.

– Change one’s religion without coercion.

– Be free from discrimination because of one’s faith

.However, religious freedom also carries responsibilities. No one may use religion to:- Encourage violence or hatred against other groups.- Force anyone to adopt a particular faith.- Violate laws designed to protect the safety, dignity, and rights of others.

The Reality of Mozambique

Mozambique is a country known for the peaceful coexistence of Christians, Muslims, and followers of African Traditional Religions. This diversity is a national treasure that should be preserved through mutual respect.

Respecting religious freedom does not mean agreeing with every belief. It means recognizing that every citizen has the right to practice their faith peacefully while respecting the rights of others.

When we learn to respect religious freedom, we strengthen peace, promote justice, and contribute to a more united society.

Question for Reflection

“Do we treat with respect those who profess a different religion from ours, even when we disagree with their beliefs?”

Conclusion

True religious freedom does not favor one religion over another. It protects human dignity and ensures that everyone can live according to their faith—or their choice not to have one—with freedom, responsibility, and respect for the law.
