The True Picture of the Inward Man
Ecclesiastes 1:14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
Ecclesiastes tells the truth many are afraid to admit: when you really stop and look at life “under the sun,” it often feels empty, repetitive, and deeply frustrating. The writer has “seen all the works that are done under the sun,” and his conclusion is sobering— “all is vanity and vexation of spirit.” The phrase “vexation of spirit” pictures an inner agitation, a restless groaning that no amount of success, pleasure, or human wisdom can silence. It is the cry of a heart that has tasted everything this world offers and still feels an ache it cannot explain away.
A Deep Truth on the Reality of this Life
That groaning from within is not just ancient poetry; it is the quiet soundtrack of many lives today. People work hard, build careers, chase relationships, collect possessions, and yet in the still moments, they sense something is missing. It feels like trying to hold the wind in your hands—what you thought would finally satisfy keeps slipping through your fingers. Ecclesiastes names that experience honestly, refusing to dress it up with shallow optimism.
Yet the very fact that we groan points to a deeper truth: it was not the will of the Creator to make us that way, according to the scripture, Romans 8:20 Selah. That inner restlessness is like a spiritual alarm, warning us not to settle for this life. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. 1 Corinthians 15:19
Empty Now in Hope of being Filled
Our salvation is a hope of a change in the world to come; in the meantime, we are to pass the time of our sojourn here in fear. 1Peter 1:17 We are commanded by scriptures to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world, to fear God and keep his commandments. In recognizing the emptiness of our lives, it gives us hope for something better in the future, and in not seeking to fulfil our desires with the sinful delicacies of this world, it keeps us empty and expecting “that” which is to come. 1Corinthians 13:10, Philippians 3:11-12.
Romans 8:20-22 20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, 21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
