This article is written from the perspective of experience. Pastor Philip Barbor Joshua lives in Liberia; his region experiences seasons of severe flooding. Many lose their belongings, their food, and their livelihood. Here he speaks of having a sincere heart towards God in the midst of trials.
Sometimes it is extremely difficult to praise or serve God, worship Him, and be faithful to him when we are passing through suffering, hardship, loss, and every kind of trial. In such moments, continuing to serve God with a thankful heart instead of a complaining or bitter spirit requires genuine faith. Pain or suffering often tempts us to question God’s goodness or faithfulness, but true spiritual maturity is revealed when we remain faithful even when we do not understand His purposes. Our circumstances may change, but God’s character never changes. He is still worthy of our worship and service, whether we are experiencing abundance or enduring seasons of deep affliction.
This is why the story of Job remains one of the greatest examples of steadfast faith in the Bible. When Job received the devastating news that he had lost his possessions, his children, and later his health, he humbled himself before God instead of blaming Him. This is something that is difficult for any of us today to do. The Bible says, “Then Job arose, tore his robe, shaved his head, and fell to the ground and worshiped. And he said: ‘The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.'” (Job 1:20–21). Job’s response is rare and challenging, especially in a generation where many turn away from God during difficult times. His example teaches us that true worship or service to God is not based on favorable circumstances but on unwavering trust in the sovereignty and faithfulness of God in whatever we may be going through.
