In a world that often defines freedom as the absence of restraint, true freedom is far deeper—it begins within the heart and mind. External circumstances may change, but inner freedom is rooted in spiritual truth. The Bible reminds us in John 8:32, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” This freedom is not dependent on wealth, status, or even comfort, but on understanding and embracing truth. When a person aligns their inner life with God’s truth, they gain a sense of peace and liberty that no external force can take away.
Many people seek freedom by trying to control their environment, yet remain burdened by fear, guilt, or anxiety. Scripture teaches that these internal chains can only be broken through spiritual renewal. This freedom is not simply the ability to do as one pleases, but the power to live righteously and without the weight of sin. If you are still bound and controlled by your sin that is a true indication that you are not free from it. The power comes when you live in a constant abiding of keeping truth in your heart.
What most people don’t realize is they think by telling themselves that they are saved or free from sin that they are speaking to themselves truth. In reality, it is only a psyche, a coping mechanism, or mindset that most people of religion adopt to keep themselves positive and walking by “faith”. If you speak the truth in your heart then you will be honest with yourself and what your sins are. This is not to continue in them or by making excuses for them but through repentance to get completely out of them, never to return and never to forget.
This is where true freedom lies, Psalms 15:1-2 1 A Psalm of David. LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? 2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.
A holy life comes from a holy heart, and the freedom of a vibrant spiritual life comes from an honest and sincere examination of yourself and keeping in that mind of humility. Ultimately, true freedom within comes from keeping yourself unspotted from the world and to be wholly sanctified, living everyday in spiritual strength, free from sin.
James 1:21-27 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. 26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. 27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
